In Memory Of
Sumiko Nakada

Sumiko Nakada was a resident of the 4th Floor Japanese Section at Yee Hong, blessed with 97 years of a remarkable and fulfilling life defined by love, resilience, and strength. She was a devoted mother to three sons, a proud grandmother to six, and a cherished great-grandmother to five.
For the last 3.5 years of her life, Yee Hong provided Sumiko with exceptional care, fostering a safe and nurturing environment that encouraged family involvement. Her granddaughter, Michelle (Masami), served as her primary caregiver during this time, remaining deeply engaged in her well-being. During their visits together, Sumiko found joy in spending summer afternoons in the garden, admiring the plants and flowers, relaxing in the reading room adorned with Japanese décor and large windows that bathed the space in natural sunlight year-round, and watching the vibrant fish in the lobby’s aquarium.
Before moving to Yee Hong, Sumiko lived with her family. However, as her health declined, long-term care became the best option to ensure her safety and comfort. Her family will forever hold deep gratitude for the compassionate staff and volunteers at the Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care Scarborough-Finch. Special thanks go to Dr. Stephen Ng for his exemplary medical care, as well as to the dedicated nurses, personal support workers, and social workers on the 4th floor for their unwavering commitment to Sumiko’s well-being.
The 4th Floor Japanese Section Activation Team and volunteers from the Japanese community played an invaluable role in enriching Sumiko’s life. Through culturally meaningful activities, traditional cuisine, and heartfelt engagement, they fostered a profound sense of belonging and connection. Despite her physical and verbal challenges, she found comfort in watching Japanese TV shows, listening to music, and being part of an inclusive and supportive environment.
Sumiko’s legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. In her honour, the family wishes to support Yee Hong in its mission to provide compassionate, high-quality, and culturally tailored elder care within the community.
